Description of the SMED game
Objectives
In its most successful case scenario, this game allows :
- to place the participants as closely as possible to the actual conditions of a change in the series
- to show the sequence of stages
- to show the potential benefits and the importance of methodological rigor to achieve the goals (the change goes from approx. 300 sec. to 5 sec. at the end of the game !!!)
- to highlight the impact of time savings on the size of lots in production
- to make the connection with the other Lean concepts (tasks standardization, 5S, Quality, ...)
Who does it target ?
The people (Managerial Staff, Technicians and Operators) in the Functions Production, Methods, Logistics, Quality. This game is ideally played during a SMED approach launch at the company, will ALL the concerned actors.
Number of necessary participants (without the speaker) = 5 to 6 maxi.
If there are more than 6 persons, it's preferable to use 2 games (or more depending on the capacity of the animator) paralleled to create also a healthy emulation between the teams.
Preparation & Organization
A room which can accommodate the group of people, equipped with :
- tables orientated in the shape of a U to facilitate the animation
- a flip chart for explanations and game results
- a video projector + screen + PC (non mandatory, but facilitating the presentation of concepts and the course of the game)
Duration of the game
between 2h and 3h depending on the chosen animation. 3h and a video camera is used for the observation of the first change in the series and its analysis.
This game is set in 4 steps :
- Realization of a first change in the series for the initial conditions (= current situation)
- Reflect on ways to make a first level of improvement "without investment" and then test them
- To consider all other technical and organizational solutions and test the simplest first
- Test the other technical and organizational solutions
Knowledge & Skills necessary for the Speaker
Furthermore the principles of SMED approach itself, knowledge of related subjects are a "plus" to support the speech and show consistency with other approaches Lean (5S, Standardized tasks, Pulled Flux ...)
